Wire EDM (electrical discharge machining) uses an electrically charged thin brass wire to slice through metal - including difficult-to-machine metals. Wire EDM cuts intricate profiles using rapid, controlled, repetitive spark discharges.

The work piece must be electrically conductive and work pieces often can be stacked and cut simultaneously. The narrow kerf (cut width) and dimensional accuracy of EDM make it possible to provide close-fitting parts.  Work piece thickness ranges from only a few thousands of an inch to several inches.

Shapes can be simple or complex. Wire EDM allows cutouts and thin walls, intricate openings and tight radius contours, both internally and externally.

Example parts include punches, dies, stripper plates and gears.
