Steel-Rule-Die Blanking

Tue, 10 Jun 2008

Steel-rule-die blanking is a stamping process in which a custom tool is used to cut a part from sheet material. It is actually a shearing process in which a formed knife edge is used to cut a part from stock material.  The tooling consists of a thin strip of steel formed to the contour of the part. Cutting is performed against a flat surface made of steel, wood, or rubber.  Possible shapes that can be obtained from steel-rule-die blanking are most 2D forms including cutouts.

Steel-rule-die blanking is predominantly used for nonmetallic softer material and is generally lower cost than blanking due to simpler tooling. Design changes for tooling are also easier than in most other tooling.

Example parts include gaskets, packing parts, custom boxes, etc.

eMachineShop makes it easy to design and order parts using steel-rule-die blanking via special CAD software.
