Honing

Inspection of honed engine bore

Honing is a mechanical process that creates precision surfaces by the rubbing action of an abrasive tool against a workpiece. Unlike grinding, in honing the tool floats with respect the the workpiece surface.

Honing is usually applied to flat or cylindrical shapes. Examples of uses for honing include engine bores, sliding mechanical devices, hydraulic devices, bushings, dies, broach rings, etc. Honing is normally applied to the surfaces of metals. The tooling used in honing includes stock items and those custom designed.

Cost reduction options for honing including reduction of the flatness spec and reducing the total surface area.

Honing Design considerations

  • Consider accessibility to the honed surface.
  • Indicate a desired micro inch surface roughness.
  • Check that the material is appropriate for the process.

"In our company we have used many software packages like Auto Cad, Pro E and Solid Work. I have found all of them very complicated. I tried to use them many times but never succeeded. eMachineShop provided the first time I could get a complete design and provided automatic design analysis. The software is really very helpful. Thanks."
