Scotch Yoke
Scotch Yoke
Scotch yoke in wood by Pierre Olivier
The Scotch Yoke mechanism converts rotary to linear motion. As the disc/pin rotates, the shaft/oblong moves left and right in a sinusoidal motion.
The advantages of the Scotch Yoke over a crankshaft include fewer moving parts, smoother operation and more time spent in the dwell position, which in engines can improve efficiency slightly.
