Compression and torsion springs
Spring making is a process that makes springs, typically by wrapping straight wire onto a steel shaft. Spring making usually produces helical wire formations referred to as compression springs and expansion springs but can also produce torsion springs, flat springs, V springs and more complex shapes. Spring making generally uses steel wire or steel sheet but can use other metals as well.
For simple helical springs, no custom tooling is normally required. For complex springs custom jigs may be required.
Examples of uses of springs include: vehicle suspensions, garage door torsion springs, hammock supports, wind-up toy springs, clock springs, etc.
Spring making cost optimizations include reduction of shape complexity reducing diameter and total length of wire.
Note: This process is not yet supported by the eMachineShop CAD software.
