Surface Grinding

Sine Plate Made with Surface Grinding

Surface grinding is a process that creates precision flat surfaces to high tolerance, typically by moving a workpiece on an X/Y table under a cylindrical rotating grinding wheel.

Surface grinding provides a way to make very flat surfaces without expensive precision machining. Example applications of surface grinding include precision surfaces used in machine tools, precision jigs, precision mounting plates, etc.

Surface grinding is usually applied to metals. No special tooling is generally needed for surface grinding.

Cost reduction options include reducing the flatness tolerance requirements and reducing the surface area to be ground.

Surface Grinding Design Considerations

  • Generally the surface to be ground is the highest surface of the workpiece.
  • For maximum manufacturing convenience the bottom surface of the workpiece is flat and held by a magnetic chuck during the surface grinding process.

"I am not very well versed in utilizing CAD programs but I found your site and information to be the best that I have seen so far. With a minimal amount of tutorial time I was able to design a bracket and look at the 3D version which allowed me to see a potential problem with the design. You folks are definitely one of the most valuable sites I ..."
