Pipes, rods, etc.

I would like to create a couple of parts out of brass pipe, however I am unable to figure out how to select brass pipe as a material. It is listed under your materials link ("Brass shapes include sheet, rod, plate, hex, pipe and a variety of beams."), but I don't know how to make it my basic material. If I create a cylinder of brass, will it use brass pipe as a base material?
