Specifying pre-shaped stock

I know that we can specify pre-shaped stock to save on cost ( [-- login to view link --] ), but how do we know what you have in stock? Do we have to find a vendor for the pipes/rods that we want, or do we just list an acceptable range of dimensions and let you find the cheapest thing that fits? The width of my pipes/rods are not critical to my design, so I would prefer to know price before deciding on which stock to use.

Also, when I drew a simple rod the cost still came up as if I had to lathe it (rather than just being the stock cost of a rod). Does this just mean that there are no stock rods of that width and material?

Thanks!

Good questions. I've updated:

I'm not clear on your last paragraph.

Is this possible with other types of relatively standard stock, for example square rod? (See McMaster #9008k26 for reference to what I would be using as my base.)

I am using this material for the "legs" of a machine, and there are quite a number of tapped holes in various places, but I imagine just [-- login to view link --] and [-- login to view link --] the holes would be quite a "leg-up" on milling the whole thing from a block. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself...)

I am trying to draw a square tube with simple holes drilled from front to back. I changed machine to "Comments to Machinist" as directed by tech2, but then receive error that a machine type must be selected. In addition, my drawing is altered when I swith from a machine type (e.g. mill) to the "Comments to Machinist." Apparently, no order can be placed unless a particular machine type is selected other than "Comments to Machinist"....very frustrating. What do I do?

I've attached my file here.

I see you placed the order. Yes, you must have one real machine in a design.

Does the price/analysis functionality know about pre-shaped stock or do we have to request pricing outside the progam (via email).

I've tried various ways but can't seem to get the calculated pricing to change by specifying pre-shaped stock.
