I was wondering if it would be possible to machine a diamond screw, sometimes also called a yankee screw. I've attached drawings of an example. This is part of a level-wind winch.

I think you want to make a winch spooling shaft (or be known self reversing screw shaft, diamond screw shaft, winch lwvwl winder shaft).
