Spur Gear Cutting
Gears are toothed wheels that mesh together to transmit a force. Spur
gears are mounted on parallel shafts.

Many
methods are available for manufacturing Spur Gears such as Machine cutting (Hobbing,
Milling, Shaping), Grinding, Casting, Molding, Forming, Blanking, Stamping, and Wire
EDM. A suitable method can be selected depending upon the quality requirements,
production quantity, cost, material and application.
Possible shapes
Any spur gear.

Example parts
A wide variety of spur gears of small to large dimensions for gearboxes.
Advantages of Spur Gear Cutting
Spur gears are the simplest and most economical type of
gear.
Specifications for Spur Gear Cutting
Material - In order
for gears to achieve their required performance, the selection of a suitable gear material
is important and it should be based on material properties and application requirements. Ferrous
Metals: Ferrous metals are the most widely used for gears, offering high
strength, response to heat treatment and low cost. Cast iron, carbon steels and alloy
steels are in common use. Non-Ferrous Metals: Non-ferrous metals
usually offer good machinability, light weight, corrosion resistance and are non-magnetic.
The commonly used non-ferrous materials for gears are brass or bronze.
Plastics are also commonly used for gears via injection molding.
Alternative machines
- Injection molding.
Tooling - CNC Spur
Gear Cutting requires only software program tooling.

Reducing costs - reduce quantity of teeth and size of
gear.
