Band Sawing
Band sawing creates rough cuts by applying a continuous-loop saw blade to the material being cut. Band sawing is often a first step to other machining processes.
Band sawing provides a low cost process for low-precision cuts, usually in a straight line. Possible shapes include convex polygons and concave polygons where two obtuse angles are adjacent to any acute angle.
Band sawing can be applied to most hard materials but becomes difficult for very hard metals.
Cost reduction options for band sawing include reducing shape complexity, reducing total cut surface area and reducing material hardness.
Band Sawing Design Considerations
- Tolerances are relatively low - typically .05"
- Cut surfaces are relatively rough
- Possible shapes are as described above
