Blanking is a process that creates shapes in sheet material by applying a punch and die, custom designed to the shape of your design. Blanking forces the custom punch tool through the sheet and into a mating die. A key advantage of blanking is its low cost when the quantity is moderate to high (typ. 1000+).
Blanking can create almost any 2D shape. The process can be applied to most sheet metals. Blanking requires a custom punch and die which adds to initial cost but results in low production costs.
Blanking Cost Reduction Tips
- Use rounded corners and shapes.
- Try to design shapes with no interior holes or cutouts.
- Minimize the size of the part.
Blanking design considerations
- Edges will have a slight rounding on the top side
- Edges will have a slight burr on the bottom side.
- The bottom side may have a few thousandths more material than the top side.
