Rack and Pinion
The rack and pinion mechanism converts linear motion to or from rotary motion. As the gear rotates the rack moves left or right. Conversely, as the rack moves the gear will rotate.
The rack and pinion mechanism is often used, for example, in automobile steering due to it's low backlash and instant feedback from the road. The rack can be thought of as a gear of infinite diameter.
