I am having trouble with the revolve technique. File "Mainshaft 2" is what I have successfully be able to create so far. The section indicated in the front view as datum in file "Mainshaft 2 a" shows the desired profile for the top section. (You have already answered my question regarding the threads and keyway. Thank You) The front view in file "Mainshaft 2 b" shows how I thought it might be done. The front view in file "Mainshaft 2 c" shows what happens when I try to produce the 3D rendering of file "Mainshaft 2 b."
The file "Mainshaft 2 c is attached to a separate post as I have evidently exceeded the maximun allowable file size.
Please advise.

Try using Revolve for the full length of the part, including any needed extra material and then removing material in the Top view (with Z = Air Inside).
